Parking access control and automation
CarBNP is a parking access control and automation system for car parks, multi-storey car parks, office garages and residential buildings. It connects to smart and plate-recognition (ANPR) barriers or fits its own gate controller, opens the way for drivers who have booked and paid, and gives you one web Dashboard for spaces, bookings and monthly payouts.

How does CarBNP control access to a car park?
CarBNP opens your barrier, gate or garage door only for a car with a paid booking, matched by its plate or the driver’s phone.
Already have a smart barrier? We connect to it.
We link CarBNP to the barrier system you already run.
A basic barrier? Our gate controller makes it open for booked drivers.
Drivers open it from their phone while their booking runs.
A garage door? We automate that too.
It opens for booked drivers, so nobody hands out remotes or keys.
- Coming soon
Drivers without the app? Payment kiosks are on the way.
Card, Apple Pay or Google Pay on site, for large car parks where many drivers come without the app.
Does it work with the barrier I already have?
Usually, yes, and you keep your barrier: we connect to smart and number-plate-recognition (ANPR) barriers through their API, and fit our own gate controller to basic barriers.
- Smart barrier · connects through our barrier API
- Basic barrier · gets our gate controller
How the barrier API works
We visit your site and fit what each entrance needs. That can be a link to the smart or plate-recognition barrier you already run, our gate controller on a basic barrier, or an automated garage door. Some car parks need one of these, others need a few. Every entry and exit is tied to a booking, so you always know who is inside. Costs depend on your site and are agreed in your partner contract.
A smart barrier connects to CarBNP through our vendor-neutral barrier API, which isn’t tied to one manufacturer. Your barrier sends CarBNP the plate it sees and which gate it is. CarBNP answers allow or deny, and logs the entry or exit against the booking. Each barrier has its own API key, so every gate is set up and switched on or off on its own.
A basic barrier gets our gate controller, which makes it open for booked drivers. Drivers open it from their phone while their booking runs, for each bay or gate you choose. We check your barriers when we visit.
Can it read number plates?
Yes. An ANPR barrier reads the plate, CarBNP checks the booking, and the barrier opens.
Plates and bookings in detail
Yes, with a plate-recognition (ANPR) barrier. The barrier reads the plate, CarBNP checks it against the bookings for that car park, and the barrier opens or stays down.
Every booking is for one car, and drivers add its plate when they book. While that car is inside, a second car on the same booking is refused. A barrier you switch off in CarBNP never refuses a car. Without an ANPR barrier, drivers open the gate from their phone instead.
Do I still need a guard or a cashier?
No. Drivers pay before they arrive and the barrier opens for their booking, so nobody checks tickets or takes payment at the gate.
- Booked driversIn by plate or from their phone
- Drivers who just turn upScan to pay at the entrance
- Something goes wrongThe driver reports it from the booking
What happens at the gate
Booked drivers get in by their plate or from their phone. Drivers who turn up without a booking can scan to pay at the entrance.
If something goes wrong, such as a gate that won’t open or a blocked bay, the driver reports it from the booking. On partner spaces the report goes straight to CarBNP support, and you see it in the Dashboard. You can keep staff on site if you want to; the system doesn’t depend on them.
How do drivers pay?
Online before they arrive, by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, or by scanning a code at your entrance.
- Scan the code with the camera
- Enter the plate number
- Pick the time and pay
Scan to pay and kiosks in detail
Drivers book by the hour, the day or the month in the CarBNP app or on the website, and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Each booking is tied to the car’s plate, so the barrier knows who has paid.
Where it suits your site, drivers who turn up without a booking can scan the QR code on a sign at your entrance, enter their plate, choose how long, and pay by Apple Pay, Google Pay or card. It all happens in the phone’s browser, so there’s nothing to install and no ticket to keep. The service fee is shown before they pay, and parking is checked by plate number. Staying longer? A second scan on the same phone opens Add time.
For large car parks, where many drivers come without the app, we’re building payment kiosks that will take card, Apple Pay and Google Pay on site, alongside online payment.
Can drivers find a free bay in a large garage?
Yes. You draw your levels, bays and lanes in the Dashboard, and drivers see free bays and the way to them.
How the garage map works
Upload a plan of your garage in the Dashboard and trace its levels, bays, one-way lanes and gates. Drivers then see which spots are free on each level, book any free spot or pick a bay, and follow the way there and back out.
What do I manage in the Dashboard?
Your spaces, gates, bookings, driver reports and payouts, in one web Dashboard. Partners don’t need the mobile app.
Everything in the Dashboard
It runs in the browser, from what’s free right now to when you’ll be paid.
Spaces. Work on drafts, publish straight to live, duplicate a space and manage its photos. Take a space offline and it’s hidden from search, while bookings already made still go ahead.
Gate devices and barriers. Choose which devices open the way in for each spot, such as the shared barrier and then the level door.
Bookings. Every booking across your spaces, with its times, the space and its status.
Reports from drivers. See what drivers reported from their bookings, such as a gate that wouldn’t open or a blocked bay.
Payouts and settlements. What each booking earned, and the monthly settlement on the 10th for the previous month, with its statement.

Planning a new car park? What to install for CarBNP
Put a barrier with power and a network connection at every entry and exit, and choose ANPR if you want entry by plate.

- Power and networkAt each barrier
- An ANPR barrier for entry by plateWithout one, drivers use their phone
- Garage doors on levelsWe can automate those too
- A plan of each levelFor the garage map
- Room for a payment kioskIf many drivers come without the app
Installation notes
Talk to us before you order barriers, and we’ll go through what fits your site. Smart and ANPR barriers connect through the CarBNP barrier API, which works with any barrier that can send the plate and gate to an outside system. Basic barriers work with our gate controller, and drivers open them from their phone.
Each barrier needs power and a network connection. We go through what your barriers need when we visit.
With a plan of each level, you trace bays and lanes for the garage map. Leave room for a payment kiosk by the entrance if many drivers will come without the app.

- You follow it in the Dashboard
How we tune it with you
Before the first booking, we go through your car park with you. Once drivers start booking, you can see how it’s used and change what’s open.
Each level and bay goes into the Dashboard, so every booking belongs to a real bay. You might keep some bays for regulars and open others to bookings in the hours they’d otherwise stand empty. Occupancy and bookings for every level show in the Dashboard, so you can open more bays or fewer as you see how drivers use them.
What does CarBNP cost a car park?
Your fee and any hardware costs depend on your site and are agreed in your partner contract, after we’ve seen the car park.
See what drivers payWho does what, and when costs are agreed
Most of the work is ours. You tell us how the car park runs today and which bays you want to open to bookings, and add your company and bank details. CarBNP visits the site and helps with the installation.
Hardware and fees depend on your site and are agreed in your partner contract before anything is installed. We talk them through with you first. Drivers pay their own small service fee for card processing. They see it before they pay, and it doesn’t come out of your share.
How is it different from a ticket-and-cashier car park?
With CarBNP, drivers pay before they arrive and the barrier checks their booking, instead of taking a ticket in and paying a cashier on the way out.
| Question | Ticket machine and cashier | CarBNP |
|---|---|---|
| Who opens the barrier | A ticket going in, a paid ticket or the cashier going out | The barrier, when plate or phone matches a paid booking |
| How drivers pay | Pay station or cashier, after parking | Online before arriving, or scan to pay at the entrance |
| Staff at the gate | Usually a cashier or attendant | Not needed |
| Booking ahead | Usually not possible | By the hour, the day or the month |
| Plate check | Often the ticket is the only proof | Every entry checked at ANPR barriers |
| Drivers who just turn up | Take a ticket | Scan to pay at the entrance |
| Reporting | Ticket and cash records | Bookings, reports, payouts and every entry and exit |
The comparison in detail
Both get drivers in and out. The difference is when drivers pay, who has to be at the gate and what you can see afterwards.
A ticket car park hands out a ticket at the entrance and takes payment on the way out. The entry machine opens with a ticket; on the way out, a paid ticket or the cashier does. Drivers pay at a pay station or the cashier after parking, usually with a cashier or attendant on hand during opening hours. Booking ahead is usually not possible, so drivers turn up and look for a space. Depending on the system, the ticket is often the only proof, and records are the tickets and cash from the machine or the cashier. Drivers who just turn up take a ticket, and no phone is needed.
With CarBNP, drivers book and pay before they arrive, by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, and the barrier checks the booking by plate or phone. They book by the hour, the day or the month from the CarBNP map. At ANPR barriers every entry is checked against a booking for that plate, with one car per booking. Drivers who just turn up scan to pay with a phone. Bookings, driver reports and payouts are in the web Dashboard, with entries and exits logged against each booking.
Partner questions
What car park operators ask before they partner with us.
All questions in the Help centreDo I need the CarBNP app?
No. Partners work in the CarBNP Dashboard on the web. The mobile app is for drivers and hosts.
Which barriers does CarBNP work with?
Any smart or plate-recognition barrier that can use our vendor-neutral barrier API. The barrier sends CarBNP the plate and the gate, and CarBNP answers allow or deny. Basic barriers work with our gate controller instead.
Do I need to replace my barrier?
Usually not. If it’s a smart barrier, we integrate with it. If it’s a basic one, our gate controller makes it work with bookings. How barriers connect
Can two cars use the same booking?
No. Each booking is for one car and its plate. While that car is inside, a second car on the same booking is refused at the barrier.
What happens if I switch a barrier off in CarBNP?
A switched-off barrier never refuses a car. Each barrier has its own API key, so switching one off leaves the others working as before.
Does CarBNP work for a multi-storey car park?
Yes. Drivers can book ahead in the app, and drivers without it can scan to pay at the entrance. Payment kiosks are coming soon. You can draw the garage’s levels and bays in the Dashboard, so drivers see free bays and the way to them.
How am I paid?
Monthly, to the bank account (IBAN) you add in the Dashboard. Each month’s bookings are settled on the 10th of the following month, and you’ll find the statement in the Dashboard.
Can I take spaces offline?
Yes, whenever you need to. An offline space is hidden from search, and bookings already made for it still go ahead.
Who handles problems drivers report?
Drivers report a problem from their booking, say a gate that won’t open or a blocked bay. On partner spaces the report goes to CarBNP support, and you can see every report in the Dashboard.
What do I need to sign up?
Talk to us first. We visit your car park, help with the installation and agree terms in a partner contract. To go live, you add your company details, billing details and a bank account (IBAN) in the Dashboard.
